MYOPIA PREVENTION FOR CHILDREN Myopia, or nearsightedness, is an important topic surrounding parents and their children. Myopia progression occurs when the eye elongates and/or the cornea becomes more curved, which is likely to progress during childhood to early adulthood. Since myopia tends to run in families, parents with high nearsightedness may pass on this risk factor to their children. There are many myths and controversy regarding myopia control, but what actually works.
Orthokeratology or Corneal Reshaping Therapy (CRT): Studies show this method of fitting a specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lens does slow eye growth in myopic children. These lenses act like “braces” for the eye, still allowing for normal development. Many times, children may have to wear only a retainer lens at bedtime.
Atropine and Pirenzepine (gel) Drug Therapies: Studies show these topical eye drops can reduce myopic progression by temporarily paralyzing the focusing muscles inside the eye, thereby reducing near point strain. This therapy many times is impractical because of unwanted side effects such as a large dilated pupil, light sensitivity, and blurred near vision which makes school work difficult and may hinder the child in sport related activities. |
